Newsletter - Winter 2015
Today is the tenth birthday of Contentedbaby.com. It is amazing to look back at how we have grown over the years, and I am always so proud and delighted each week to see new parents from around the world joining the website, along with the parents who were with us at the very start and whose children have grown up with us.
For me, it's a bittersweet day as the 10th November also marks the day seventeen years ago that my beloved mother passed away, after battling a very aggressive form of lung cancer for five years. When I launched the website ten years ago I especially chose this particular day, as I wanted to do something positive on the anniversary of her passing, that would always remind me of my mother, who was such a huge influence on me, and who has always been my guiding light. All these years later, there is never a day that I do not think about her and today I would like to share with you a short article in memory of my mother which I hope will help you understand the huge influence she was in my life and how 'The Contented Little Baby Book' was born.
My family, friends and many of the wonderful parents I had worked with over the years urged me to fulfil my mother's dying wish and write "the book". On 1st July 1999 'The Contented Little Baby Book' was born, and while I was always confident it would be a success, nothing could have prepared me for what has followed!
One thing my mother always taught me was the importance of helping others in life, but she also reminded me that in order to be able to give to others it is important to look after yourself in life. It's so easy nowadays to be endlessly busy with work and home life, and I hear from so many of you who are struggling to juggle everything. It can be very hard to carve out time for yourself in a hectic schedule, but it's essential to ensure you do take some time to be good to yourself.
I know that many of you have reached the stage of introducing solids and whilst this can be an exciting time I understand that going from first stage solids to three meals a day can be quite daunting. Regardless of whether you started solids at five months or six months, by the time your baby reaches seven months he should be well on the way to eating three well balanced solid meals a day. Check out the guidelines for stage two weaning for babies aged seven to nine months. While it is important to keep increasing the solids until your baby is around seven months, it is equally important to ensure that your baby's milk intake does not decrease too quickly.
This month's case study describes how Dylan, aged six months, started to refuse milk due certain foods being introduced too early. Further advice on milk intake during the second stage of weaning can be found in this lovely feature 'From bottles to beakers' written by one of our founder members, Laura, who gives really good tips and advice on how she progressed her babies from bottles to beakers.
Our final topic on weaning, which comes up time and time again among the members is about portion sizes. It can be hard to know whether your baby is taking the right amount of food when he is still fairly new to solids. Our portion size guide for seven months will help you to have a clearer idea of what a portion size is for a baby, and what you might expect him to be eating.
Another hot topic on the website is daytime sleep and whether babies are getting the right amount. My top tips for daytime sleep should help those of you who may want a little help with this subject.
For many of you, this term will be your child's first at school, and others may be looking forward to this in the near future, so I am delighted to be able to offer a complimentary copy of my 'Contented Baby goes to School' book for one lucky follower! If you'd like to be entered into the draw for the free copy of the book, all you have to do is send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. We also have some fantastic special offers for Contented Baby followers from selected companies which I have personally chosen to work with. I know that some of you have already discovered the Dream Bag sleeping bags which come in a range of sizes and tog ratings. If you'd like a warmer one for your baby as we head into the winter, there's a special 20% discount here.
The Snooze Shade is invaluable at keeping your baby protected from the elements and ensuring that you can keep naptimes on track, and they've got a special offer for members of the Contented Baby community.
Easyblinds blackout blinds have brought out a new travel blind which I think is well worth looking at and they are offering CLB members a 10% discount.
And finally, I know that a number of you are now expecting again, and just for you there is the brilliant myHospitalBag, created by a Contented Baby mum for other mothers. It contains all you need to take to hospital for the birth in one pre-packed bag, from face wipes to flip flops! It will be a godsend to those of you who are already busy with your families, find out all about it here.
Whilst I feel sad that my mother is not here to share today with me, it gives me great joy to think of all you wonderful parents out there who have allowed me in some way or another to help you with your precious babies.
