Newsletter - March 2011

Welcome to the March edition of our newsletter. Spring is here at last, and it’s a good time to get out and about with your children. It’s also an ideal opportunity to start to introduce them to the idea of growing plants, flowers and even, vegetables which can be tremendous fun for small children. Sarah Bloom-Davis’s feature discusses how to encourage an interest in gardening in your small children.

Of course, spring is also the time of year when we tend to think about giving our homes a top-to-toe clean. Many parents feel concerned about using strong chemical cleaners or bleaches around the home when they have young children, and we’ve taken a look at some of the natural green alternative cleaners you can use around the home.

The Spring weather means lighter mornings and this can bring it with it the challenge of early morning waking. As a result of the great feedback that we have received, we are delighted to let you know that easyblinds are offering a 10% discount to all Contented baby followers for the month of March. You can claim this by entering the code 'contented' at the checkout.

As the weather improves some of you may be considering starting swimming with your babies. We have an interesting article The art of contented baby swimming by Fiona Campbell, which has some great hints and tips for those of you just introducing your children to swimming and those of you who already swim with your child.

This month we are featuring extracts from my latest book Top Tips for Weaning. We also have ten copies to give away. For those of you interested in reviewing it, send your full name and address to sophie@contentedbaby.com

Baby Hip Health Week, takes place during March which aims to raise awareness of the need to check babies’ hips properly during the first few weeks of life in order to prevent future complications. Baby Hip Health Week runs from 13-19 and is organised by the charity Steps, which supports families who have children with lower limb problems. The charity’s director and founder Sue Banton MBE has answered our questions about baby hip health.

My top tips for this month are concerned with nappy rash. Although it’s a very common condition, that doesn't make it any less distressing when you see your baby suffering with it. My tips discuss how to deal with nappy rash and also give advice on how to avoid it in the first place.

In the members only section for March, we have our regular expert, dietician and nutritionist Fiona Hinton who is giving her advice on probiotics, vitamin supplements and whether there is a link between breast-feeding and asthma. Our Toddler case, studies Sophie who was waking in the early hours with nightmares, and on the baby site our case study looks at Erin aged 15 weeks who was feeding throughout the night.

I hope that you all find this month’s features interesting and that you manage to get out and about with you little ones to enjoy some of the finer weather.

Best wishes to you all
