Swaddling

My daughter, who is just seven weeks, has always slept well with no sleep association problems. The problem is that she loves being swaddled but just recently she has been waking during the night (and sometimes between 7 and 10pm) and appears to be fighting to get out of the swaddle. I have tried to take the swaddle away, but she flails her arms around and won't settle unless I rock her (which I don't want to do long term as it may cause a sleep association problem).

Answer:

Now that your daughter is almost two months old it is important to get her used to sleeping unswaddled so as to prevent the dangers that may occur through overheating.

As she still thrashes about when sleeping, use the following method to get her used to being half-swaddled, before removing the swaddle completely. Start with the nap she has at 8.45am and swaddle her as usual, but leave one arm free. If you can, remember to alternate the arm which is left out each morning. As this is a short nap, she should not be too disturbed. After a few days of this, begin to do the same thing at 7pm as well, while continuing to swaddle her fully for the night after her 10.30pm feed. After a few days, once she is used to one arm being left out at the shorter naps, use the same method of swaddling through the night, leaving alternate arms free. You will gradually be able to half-swaddle her with both arms free.
